God did not create man to disobedience, rather He enjoins “Sanctify yourselves therefore, and be ye holy: for I am the LORD your God” (Lev 20:7) having created him in His image and likeness “So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them” (Gen 1:27).
Human development begins after the union of male and female gametes or germ cells during a process known as fertilization which comes about as a result of sexual intercourse. Sexual intercourse is common to all living creatures and it is necessary for multiplication. In man, however, sexual relationship became a pleasure after the fall; when God pronounced His judgment on Eve “thy desire shall be to thy husband” (Gen 3:16). When the desire is directed towards any other than the spouse it becomes adultery (voluntary sexual relations between a married person and somebody other than his or her spouse) or fornication (sexual intercourse between two consenting adults who are not married to each other).
If the desire, according to Gen 3:16 is kept within the family there would be no need for any debate on when life begins.
When Does Life Begin?
Human life begins long before birth. A new individual human being begins at fertilization; when the sperm and ovum meet to form a single cell. If the baby’s life is not interrupted, it will someday become an adult man or woman. God makes this clear in “Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee, and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations” (Jer 1:5) and “Listen, O isles, unto me; and hearken, ye people, from far; The LORD hath called me from the womb; from the bowels of my mother hath he made mention of my name” (Isa 49:1).
Advocates of Abortion’s View
Advocates of abortion have variously cited Bible verses to support their view, albeit wrongly! Before discussing the various verses it will be essential to point these advocates to “For I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book: And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book” (Rev 22:18-19) which applies to all the contents of the Holy Book since “All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works” (2 Tim 3:16-17).
A distortion of the contents of the Bible creates both addition and subtraction to the Word of God and leads to causing innocent souls to sin. But Christ said “But whoso shall offend one of these little ones which believe in me, it were better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and that he were drowned in the depth of the sea. Woe unto the world because of offences! for it must needs be that offences come; but woe to that man by whom the offence cometh!” (Matt 18:6-7). The NIV Bible renders the passage as “And whoever welcomes a little child like this in my name welcomes me. But if anyone causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin, it would be better for him to have a large millstone hung around his neck and to be drowned in the depths of the sea. Woe to the world because of the things that cause people to sin! Such things must come, but woe to the man through whom they come!” (Matt 18:5-7). Paul and John refer severally to new converts as little children “My little children, of whom I travail in birth again until Christ be formed in you” (Gal 4:19) and “My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous” (1 John 2:1).
The Wickedness of Onan
Tamar: in Gen 38 we are made aware that “Onan knew that the seed should not be his… he spilled it on the ground, lest that he should give seed to his brother. And the thing which he did displeased the LORD: wherefore he slew him also” (Gen 38:9-10). That God took this action is indicative of the fact that once there is a plan of sexual intercourse between a man and a woman God is invited into His Creative action; thus, once the male sperm fuses the female egg God breathes His breath. Otherwise, God would not have been angered since there had been no joining together of the male sperm to the female egg. This agrees with “Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee” (Jer 1:5).
Hosea: Progeny of the Rebellious Shall Not be Born
“Samaria shall become desolate; for she hath rebelled against her God: they shall fall by the sword: their infants shall be dashed in pieces, and their women with child shall be ripped up” (Hos 13:16). Using this passage to solicit for abortion is an incomplete exercise if the same passage cannot be used for justifying the killing of undesired infants and adults that are believed to be non-productive to the economy.
Sotah: Abortion-Inducing Potion due to Husband’s Jealousy
“… If any man’s wife go aside, and commit a trespass against him, And a man lie with her carnally…and he be jealous of his wife… the priest shall charge her by an oath… he shall cause the woman to drink the bitter water that causeth the curse… if she be defiled, and have done trespass against her husband, that the water that causeth the curse shall enter into her, and become bitter, and her belly shall swell, and her thigh shall rot: and the woman shall be a curse among her people. And if the woman be not defiled, but be clean; then she shall be free, and shall conceive seed” (Num 5:12-28). It is surprising that this can be used to claim that God supports abortion.
Causing a Miscarriage: Mere Property Loss
“If men strive, and hurt a woman with child, so that her fruit depart from her, and yet no mischief follow: he shall be surely punished, according as the woman’s husband will lay upon him; and he shall pay as the judges determine” (Ex 21:22). This is not an intentional removal of the fetus from the woman but an accidental hurt to the unborn child.
The Almighty is very fair in His laws. He is aware of the possibility of unintentional damage to properties and lives and takes adequate care in giving of laws. It should be noted that most laws and constitutions the world over derive from the Ten Commandments and the laws as contained in books of Moses.
We Should Confess Our Sins and Repent Rather than Justify Them
“For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world” (1 John 2:16) claims that we are wiser than the Creator. He is ever willing to forgive. A distortion of the facts of the Holy Scriptures is more than the sin of Adam.
Remember that God did not curse humanity through Adam but He pronounced “…If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book: And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book” (Rev 22:18-19) as a curse on whoever adds to or takes away from the Book of Prophecy.
Life begins immediately after the fusion of the male sperm and the female egg.
You, as a Christian, should remember that there is no other legal luminary in Heaven other than Christ and that on the day of judgment He will no longer be The Advocate but The Judge and the Word of the Lord will be the only Witness for or against you.
