REPLENISH THE EARTH (GEN 1:28)

A Savannah Forest in Niger State of Nigeria

“Replenish the earth” and “subdue it” are the most misunderstood components of the creation blessing on man. We shall deal with “replenish the earth” in this small write-up.

The conception that “replenish” means populating the earth is erroneous. Multiplication has taken care of that.

We need to understand that blessing from God is empowerment, not an expectation. And God blesses in relation to man’s assigned role. Let us look at the components of the resources available to man:

i.     Terrestrial resources made up of the sun, the moon and the stars;
ii.    Atmospheric resources made up of the clouds, the wind and microorganisms;
iii.   Land resources made up of vegetation, the beaststhe birds, insects and microorganisms;
iv.   The earth resources made up of minerals, soil, moisture and bacteria; and
v.    Water resources made up of aquatic animals and microorganisms

Components in item (i) are without man’s reach and thus cannot be polluted by him. The sun provides the main illumination and energy requirements of the earth while the moon and the stars reflect light from the sun. Man has practically no control over these terrestrial bodies. Joshua’s command “Sun, stand thou still upon Gibeon; and thou, Moon, in the valley of Ajalon. And the sun stood still, and the moon stayed” (Josh 10:12-13) was in relation to his level of understanding. Joshua wanted daylight and he got it; it was the earth that had to stand still. God knew what he meant. That the moon continued in its movement is of no consequence since the sun’s light would swallow the moon’s reflection.

To date, there’s been no deterioration recorded of these terrestrial resources.

God wanted the same for the resources contained in items (ii) to (v). They are within man’s reach and man needs to replenish them, in quantity and quality, for continued existence of life; thus, the blessing of “replenish the earth”.

As a child of God, you have a responsibility to ensure that the resources of the earth in your area of operation are maintained in a healthy state. This we will go through together as you undertake the journey of choosing and refining your career.
